saint john's school of the arts
www.sjsota.org/Saint John's School of the Arts (SOTA) opened its doors for lessons on September 3, 1996 at Saint John's United Methodist Church in the Newberry Neighborhood of Williamsport. And twenty-eight+ years later, SOTA is a vibrant member of the North Central PA arts community with big dreams, and a bigger heart. in 2023, we installed a Board of Directors and received our 501(c)(3) non-profit status. In January 2024, we relocated to First Church Williamsport's Noth Campus, located at 1157 Market Street. For more information on their programs, visit their website.
hope made real
The founder of Hope Made Real is Mama Arlene (Brown) who was a member of Saint John's-Newberry. Urukundo Foundation includes both Urukundo Learning Center and the Urukundo Village. The Learning Center is dedicated to excellent education for Rwandan children and technical training for adults. This includes both the school for kindergarten through sixth grade and the Sewing Technical School. The Village contains the Dental Clinic, Mama-Baby House, guest house, and farm. For more information visit their website.
West End Christian Community Center (WECCC)
With the merging of Saint John's and Newberry into a new congregation and existing only a block apart, there was not a need for two campuses. Therefore the West End Christian Community Center (WECCC) became an outreach ministry of the Saint John's-Newberry UMC to embrace the needs of the community. Please visit their website.
scouts
Scout Troop 14 of St. John’s Newberry United Methodist Church was first organized as Troop 1 of Newberry, PA on January 22, 1918. With the establishment of the Williamsport Council, B.S.A. in our city in November of 1919, this Troop 1 of Newberry became Troop 14 of Williamsport, PA. The Williamsport Council later became the Lycoming County Council in 1928 and the West Branch Council in 1934. With the merging of the West Branch Council and the Sunbury Council in 1974, Troop 14 became part of the Lycoming District of the Susquehanna Council, B.S.A. serving five counties. Today we are part of the Bald Eagle District of the Susquehanna Council that serves Lycoming and Clinton Counties.
In 2018, Troop 14 celebrated 100 years of providing scouting to boys in the Newberry and surrounding area. Troop 14 has been chartered to Saint John’s, and now Saint John’s Newberry United Methodist Church for all 100 consecutive years. The Troop and Cub Pack are currently chartered to the Newberry Lions Club but still meet at the church. It has been through the efforts of many that the Troop has been and continues to be an active and strong unit. We celebrate our scouting heritage. We look forward to continued success in the coming years.
The Cub Scout program serves boys in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The Boy Scout program is available to boys ages eleven to seventeen.
